This year, Rezpiral has collaborated with mezcalero campesino and school teacher Luis Antonio Santiago of San Vicente Coatlan who runs an agave nursery where he grows agave from seed. 8,700 agave of these agave, of the subvarietals Arroqueño and Mexicano, were purchased and gifted to different campesino mezcalero families – mostly with whom Rezpiral has worked – who transplanted them into lands they manage/own/rent/control. Arroqueño and Mexicano are two subvarietals which appear to have been depleting in population these recent years making this a timely effort to repopulate.
